A few days ago I saw something on the beach in Moss (Portugal) that caught my attention.
A man, around 70 years old, was coming down some stairs leaning on his cane.
He was wearing shorts, and his swollen legs revealed pronounced veins that spoke of circulation problems and years of struggling to stay mobile.
But what struck me were his shoes.
They were big, with thick, cushioned soles.
They looked like astronaut shoes.
Good grief, the things you see!
With each step, his foot moved from side to side, as if he were walking on a trampoline.
His knee did the same.
And what should have been a simple walk turned into an effort full of tension, insecurity, and concern.
Who might have recommended him those shoes?
In theory, this type of shoe promises comfort and protection, but in practice it takes away your stability, your ability to feel the ground, and to activate your circulation.
It was stealing his quality of life.
And this isn't an isolated story.
It's the reality for thousands of people every day.
People who trust conventional shoe marketing and believe more cushioning means more health, when in fact it's just the opposite.
Everywhere you hear about sedentary lifestyles, and the first to suffer are the feet.
Because even if you move, if you trap your feet in soft shoes with thick soles and a bit of heel, your feet don't work, your circulation slows down, and your steps lose stability.
That's why, if you really want to stay active, you need shoes that let you move with confidence.
That's why I never stop repeating (and it's been many years) that your shoes should resemble a foot.
If not, we're off to a bad start.
And this is where my recommendation for the week comes in.
The Xero Dillon Canvas Slip-Ons.
Barefoot slip-on shoes.
Easy to put on and take off, in case bending down is hard for you.
Lightweight, flexible, and with a thin sole that connects you to the ground, letting your feet work and keeping your circulation active.
With the width your toes need to spread out and gain stability with every step.
Remember.
Everything starts from the ground up.
