If you can't feel the ground, you're getting old

This week I was talking with a friend who has been separated for some time.
He has met someone.
And that woman keeps the idea of ageing well very present.
She exercises. A lot.
She looks after her diet. A lot.
She gets aesthetic treatments. Many and varied.
Obsession?
Maybe.
The point is that she respects her body and takes care of it.
Anyone understands it with a car.
If it is new and starts filling with scratches, it looks older.
If the tyres wear out and you do not change them, it looks older.
If it has a broken window or a hanging mirror, it looks older.
Even if the engine still pulls strong.
Exactly the same happens with the body.
That is why you go to the dentist.
That is why some people treat hair loss.
That is why they care for skin spots.
That is why Botox, hyaluronic acid or a facelift exist.
And that is why moving, sweating and being strong changes so much how you look on the outside and how you feel on the inside.
Back to my friend and his partner.
Both take care of themselves.
Both want to age well.
However, they do not realise they wear shoes that isolate and cushion so much that the foot stops noticing where it steps.
You see.
As we age, the body loses bone density.
That is a fact.
But there is something else that is also proven: bone needs stimulus to maintain itself.
Impact, load, movement.
If the foot does not feel the ground, that stimulus disappears.
And when it disappears, bone starts losing density too early.
So it is not only that you age and lose bone,
it is that if you do not stimulate the foot, you are speeding up that process without realising it.
That is why I say there is little point in wanting to look younger if you do not take care of your feet.
Contact with the ground is not a whim of four barefoot fanatics.
It is stimulus.
It is information.
It is movement.
And when that stimulus disappears for years, you are ageing.
Well.
Do whatever you want with this information.
But if you really want to take care of your body, start where nobody starts.
With your feet.
By giving back what you have taken from them for years.
